Ray Anderson, the Chairman and Founder of Interface, Inc. and Author, Confessions of a Radical Industrialist gave his patiented motivational speech to a packed house. As keynote speakers go for the Green movement, Ray is one of the best. Ray insists that capitalism will set the frame work for the companies of the future. At the same time Ray feels “unbridaled” capitalism is not the answer to our environmental issues. A good portion of his talk focused on the corporations of the future and the societial paradigm change which needs to take place if we are to survive and thrive in the future. Ray points out that “business makes a profit to exist versus business exist to make a profit”. If we do not take care of the “golden goose” (nature) their will be no “golden egg”. Achieving balance between the biosphere and the technosphere will be critical to insuring the future resources will be available for future generations. As of today, the earth cannot support future population growth. There are four key elements to the equation: Environmental Impact, Population, Affluence, and Technology. Today, technology is fossil fuel driven and extracts from the environment and is “waste abusive.” In order to survive Technology must have a paradigm shift that focuses on Renewability, Solar/Hydrogen Driven, Benign, No Waste, and Resource Productivity.
Andrew Winston is the Founder of Winston Eco-Strategies and Author of the Green Recovery and Green to Gold. Andrew insists that the issue of the environment has gotten lost due to politics. Additionally, the biggest myth in business is that green = cost. The business of the future will see things through an environmental lense. The four keys to a GREEN recovery are:
1. Get Lean 2. Get Smart 3. Get Creative 4. Engage People
Andrew gave us an example (Wal Mart) of the “greening” of the supply chain. Wal-Mart executives met with their 20 largest suppliers in Brazil and made it manditory that they supply product that is lead free. Additionally, they were required to sign an pact that not to sell Wal-Mart a type of beef which is contributing to the distruction of the Amazon. This is an example of the paradigm shift.
Conway Trucking company now tracks the speed of their trucks and there average speed went from 65 mph to 62 mph and it saved the company over $10 million dollars.
A large hotel chain retrofitted the lights in their hotels (250,000 lights) at a cost of $400,000 and saved $1.2 million with a 2 month ROI.
Tennet a manufacturer of commercial cleaning equipment designed a floor scrubber that no longer uses chemicals to clean the floors. It is now using only tap water.
Drivers for UPS no longer turn left and it has saved the company $30 million dollars annually.
One company simply managed the Air Conditioning in their computer room…begging the question…Does a Data Center need A/C?
Do we need to fly to meet?
These examples along with other questions are going to fuel the change necessary for business to become more socially responsible and excelerate eco-balance necessary for future growth and existence. China is in the process of building 31 “Manhattans” as in NY. Where are the resources going to come from? A supply and demand “mismatch” is coming…get his point?
